It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover your next “must-read” book! Kellee Moye, of Unleashing Readers, and Jen Vincent of Teach Mentor Texts are the smart folks behind giving It’s Monday! Listening to: Finished listening to Hurricane Child by Callender. Beautiful! Now listening to The Night Diary by Hiranandani. Equally as beautiful…I hope you know that there is so much to learn from reading children’s books. I am learning a lot from this one. I wish I had paid more attention in my Social Studies/History classes in school. Either there is a lot we were not taught (truth is…there is a lot we are not taught) or I wasn’t paying attention. I am paying attention now.

On my nightstand: Finished They Called Us Enemy by Takei. Another one for learning about history and not feeling too terribly proud of the past. Just started The Miracle & Tragedy of the Dionne Quintuplets by Miller. This story is totally new to me – cannot wait to read more. Only a few pages in and I’m enthralled.

Reading with the preschooler: More Dog Man by Pilkey! Why do I feel like there are a million of these books in this series?! We also got in a few picture books throughout the week, so we had some breaks!

Listening to: Finished Careful What You Wish For by Hallie Ephron. Not my favorite mystery, but I was interested enough to finish it. Also finished We Got This. by Minor. Really enjoyed reading this quick, professional development title. Now listening to Stephen King’s most recent release, The Institute. It’s narrated by one of my FAVORITES, Santino Fontana, so I don’t even care how the story line goes – ha! I’m liking it so far…reminds me of Carrie, except all of the kids have her special “talent.”

On my nightstand: Finished I’m Not Dying With You Tonight by Segal and Jones. Great book. I’m in a bit of a rut at the moment, reading a graphic novel that isn’t really all that interesting to me.

Reading with the preschooler: We finished the Dogman book. Now reading a 5-minute story book featuring My Little Pony. And, of course, her phonics readers from school. She has moved onto the non-phonetic titles now, which is really cool! LOVE being an observer for how a child learns to read. I’ve read the research and have been in elementary schools a LONG time, but to see it happen in “real time” is awesome.

Listening to: Finished Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Bowling. So good – I just learned that there is a sequel – I will be reading it! Also finished This is How it Always is by Laurie Frankel. Told from the viewpoint of the parents of a transgender child. I loved it and I wish all parents were as accepting as the ones in this novel. Right now I’m listening to Careful What You Wish For by Hallie Ephron. It’s alright. I’m too far in now and I have to see what happens (there is a library mystery involved, after all), but it feels like it’s not really going anywhere? Taking a long time to set up the story, in my opinion.

On my nightstand: Still reading I’m Not Dying With You Tonight by Segal and Jones. Taking me so long ONLY because I’m reading it before bed and I fall asleep pretty quickly. This is an excellent book!

Reading with the preschooler: She is now into Dogman books. I had to read half of one before bed last night! How did this leap happen?! I see a long future of Captain Underpants, Lunch Lady, Fashion Kitty and more…no complaints!

Listening to: Finished Never Have I Ever by Jackson . It was okay – I needed to finish it to find out what happened, but not my favorite thriller. Listened to Amina’s Voice by Khan. Really enjoyed this realistic fiction story about a girl and her family. I think Wishtree by Applegate is a good companion book to this one. Almost finished with Enough As She Is by Simmons. Non-Fiction about raising strong daughters.

On my nightstand: Still reading I’m Not Dying With You Tonight by Segal and Jones. Taking me so long ONLY because I’m reading it before bed and I fall asleep pretty quickly. This is an excellent book!

Reading with the preschooler: Phonics readers from school.

Listening to:  I LOVED The Most Fun We Ever Had by Lombardo. Literary fiction. Reminded me very much of one of my favorite shows, Parenthood. Started Never Have I Ever by Jackson this weekend. Okay, so far. Hoping it gets more intriguing.

On my nightstand: Started reading I’m Not Dying With You Tonight by Segal and Jones. I can tell this is one that I will want everyone to read.

Reading with the preschooler: Still reading the phonics readers from school. A cool thing that happened this week is that she is starting to apply the strategies from school when she reads books other than the phonics readers. I have also noticed more blending of sounds into actual words. Nerding out over observing this process.

STORY TIME – Back to School!

I hosted the last “official” story hour for the summer at Thomas Cooper Library a couple of weeks ago – more to come, so stay tuned! The theme for our last one was BACK TO SCHOOL!

Story time collageAs folks were coming in, I had letter and word games around for them to explore. A few things that were on display were baking pans with letter magnets, and cards for letter tracing. The librarians at Thomas Cooper had created a great display of school themed books for everyone to look at too.

The Plan

Super fun!
